Dear nephew,
I love your humor as always. Thus, regarding the writing process, having a smart, intelligent and good-looking nephew is as essential as “proper grammar.”

P.S. Yes, you are smart, intelligent and good-looking, and I’m very proud of your acceptance to the Doctor of Pharmacy program.

As I was organizing boxes in our garage, I came across a box labeled, "Joe's Memorabilia." It contained journals, loose notes, and poems I'd written in the 70s and 80s. I don't think I'd opened this box since the 80s! As I read the materials within, it felt like I was reading someone else's. It was surprising and inspiring to see the differences between my thoughts and perspectives of the 70s and 80s and my current ones. From year to year, it would have seemed subtle, but comparing poems from the 70s with poems written this year, for example, I saw a dramatic change or evolution in how I perceived the world or thought about things in general. It was then that I got the idea to publish a selection of poems and prose from each decade, and the end product is As Glaciers Move, a pseudo-autobiography and a "progression of perceptions" from 1975 to 2017!

I perceive writer's block as nothing more than my mind trying to tell me to take a break! Therefore, I take a day (or more) off from attempting to write or even thinking about writing. I walk away from my computer and immerse myself in one of my hobbies: gardening or astronomy. And most times, I don't even read someone else's book because in doing so, I get frustrated that my writing has stalled. My hobbies, such that they are enjoyable and relaxing, revive my body and mind.

My current project is a book with the code name, Finding Solace, about the first year of living with terminal cancer. So far, it's a book about the raw emotions of that first year, not thoughts or feelings that I think the reader expects or anticipates. I'm trying to write directly from my soul, regardless of how embarrassing some of the soul-searching had been. And it's about encounters and conversations with family, friends, and strangers, which will be unedited dialogs--the compassionate responses to the news of my disease, and also the unexpected, funny and strange remarks!
