The Vigil is based on a story my grandfather told me when I was a young boy. A widow sat on the riverbank waiting for the body of her drowned husband to break the surface. As he told the story, she waited three days, believing against everyone else's advice that he would come up from the depths.
I wondered about that story for years--why she sat so long, why she believed he would come up the way he did. The Vigil came about as I set those thoughts to written word, though the end result was not what I expected at the outset.
