I used to escape into games so I could live as my true self, well before I realized that was what I was doing. Part of it was wish fulfillment, most of it was the fear that I would never be able to do that in real life. I remember thinking if I could get stuck in a game as myself, I would never leave! I’d stay in that virtual closet forever, even if it wasn’t truly living. Of course, that would make for a really sad, boring book. So after a bit of therapy, some encouragement from my wife, and a few bottles of hormone magic, I managed to crawl out of my own virtual closet.
