For "Shy Grove," the idea came from a small town that's a few miles from me. I'm fascinated by ghost stories and religious fanatics, so I figured it would be fun to try to combine them.

Read. Read everything you can get your hands on. Read outside your genre. Read the masters of your craft. Then set a daily goal and hit it no matter what.

I don't know if there is one "best thing." I love that I create worlds, that I get to write without shoes on, that my pug can sit in my office while I write. Mostly, I think I enjoy that my wife and kids are proud of me.

Several ways. A good workout usually knocks loose whatever was blocking my imagination. Sometimes, I'll just start writing another project or start writing stream-of-consciousness.
