All of my books have been based on my own life but they don't answer some recurring mysteries: where all my biros go, for example.... I do have one vivid childhood memory that I wish I could understand the power of, or anything about where it happened. It's of the blue spotted giraffe made of glass that was on the windowsill of a friend's bedroom. I don't know which friend, how old I was when I saw it, or why it seems important to remember it. Perhaps one day I'll write the Mystery of the Blue Giraffe.

Henry and Claire from 'The Time-traveler's Wife'? I love this romance because it takes place over so many years - back and forth - and I find that a powerful metaphor for the way that when we're in love with someone we're in love not just with their present self, but with their past and their future
