As I tended to my vegetable garden, I noticed the carrots had grown strangely long and slender, resembling bony fingers reaching up from the earth. When I pulled one from the ground, it whispered, "You should have left us buried."

My great-grandfather is actually not the child of the parents listed on his birth certificate. Instead, he is the son of one of the oldest daughters from the mother listed, which is "technically" his grandmother's previous marriage in Virginia. The previous marriage produced two boys and a girl, his mother. His mother lived with one of those boys, her brother, for her entire life. Which begs the question, was he the product of an incestuous relationship? Or something even more nefarious?
Also, why did the grandmother divorce her husband in Virginia in the mid-1800s? Divorces were not common or taken lightly at that time. Women were still considered property in the South. Or did she actually divorce her previous husband? Additionally, she married the man listed as his father, technically his grandfather, while still in Virginia.
