Keith W. Harvey I live in the Southwest and I am very fond of Mexico. With all the activity on the border, I wondered what would happen if the United States chose to build a gigantic wall, a great wall of China kind of wall, dividing the two countries. This started a line of thought that led me to write the short story, "The City," which was published in Hub Magazine. At the same time I was reading Roberto Bolaño Ávalos intensely and his spirit somehow entered the mix. I ended up writing six or seven short stories about the development of the two countries separated by a huge wall. These stories were primarily science fiction but somehow dragons started appearing to me, along with an alien race, the Argyll. These elements caused me to write the novel "Okeanus," which I submitted to the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest. In "Okeanus," a French policeman discovers a dragon underneath Notre Dame Cathedral and pursues not only the dragon but its origins. This story led to the idea of another plane, Okeanus, with portals opening between our worlds. From there I returned to Mexico and began writing a story about a far future where Europe has been basically decimated by the dragon incursion and the Pope has established his Vatican in La Ciudad.
