The fascination we all have with something that fills up our insides but is something we don't like seeing on our outsides.

My newest book is "The Book Of Chocolate." I got the idea simply because, like most of the world, I like chocolate. I'd seen stories, mostly in articles over the years, about how chocolate is a secretive and very large business, and I thought it would be really interesting to find out where chocolate came from and how it's a fixture of cultures all over the world--for both kids and adults.

Every day is a new opportunity to write, so I don't need a lot of inspiration. As for as inspiration for particular books, that can come from reading an article in a magazine, a conversation about current events with friends, visiting a museum exhibit, or sometimes just sitting and looking out the window letting my mind wander.

Write every day, and write about things that really interest you. Once you've mastered the art of writing about your personal interests, you'll find that those skills will carry over to other topics (that maybe you're not quite as interested in, but other people are).

The best thing about being a writer is the tremendous variety of subjects I get to explore. For example, in my last three books alone, I've been able to spend time with magicians, chocolate makers, scientists, and historians--all in the name of writing. Anything that interests me is a possible subject for a book, so I always write about things that interest me.

I'm fortunate in that I've never, ever had writer's block. I think part of the reason is that I write in so many different genres about so many different topics. So, I'm always doing research or writing about a new subject. When I get a little overwhelmed with one book or article, I switch to another one on a different topic to recharge.
