For Piece of Mind, Rob and I wanted to explore psychic power, but we wanted to do it in a way we hadn't seen done before. And we wanted to make it even more threatening and scary than someone just reading your thoughts - which is already pretty threatening and scary.
We like giving Emily seemingly impossible situations and seeing how she'll get herself out of them. Of course, she's pretty genius at building cool contraptions to help herself out, but we always try to push beyond mere technology so that Emily has to really stretch as a person. In Piece of Mind, she has to overcome some big personal barriers--self-protectiveness, fear of getting close to other people--to make the breakthroughs she needs to solve her problem.
