I flushed at the crowded cocktail party, a line of anxious strangers waiting outside the door for their turn. But the water rose.

You don't. You sit down every day and write, no matter what. I think waiting to be inspired is the reason that so many potential authors are "going to write a book." You can either do it or not. No middle ground. If I had waited around to be inspired before starting any of my past "real" jobs, I'd have been fired a lot!

Power through it. If what you are working on is not flowing, write something else. Anything else. Just keep writing every day!

You have to treat writing like any other job. Don't wait to be inspired. If you do, you will likely never write anything. Sit down at your desk every day and write 1000 or more words. Do it every day.

I get most of my inspiration from my children. My most recent book, The Sycamore Detective Agency, is about three young boys who fight adult crime with the help of their crazy grandpa. My three boys were the models for the main characters, and a collection of our family's grandpas, great-grandpas, and uncles went into Grandpa Jack.
