Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
J.M. Kirkley During my first trip to Galveston, I stood before a chromolithograph entitled 1900 Galveston Hurricane and Tidal Wave. I stared spellbound at images of waves the size of houses crashing, houses toppling and timber piling, folks being dragged up on rooftops, bodies tossed by the waves. I remember telling my spouse, "If I ever write a book, that would be the backdrop."

What are you currently working on?
J.M. Kirkley I'm researching the 1947 Texas City Disaster. It happened right across the bay from Galveston.

How do you get inspired to write?
J.M. Kirkley Compelling history inspires me. I'm drawn to worst case scenarios, where people not only survive but go on to live meaningful lives, despite their circumstances.
