Hey John - I won the St. Martin's Press/Private Eye Writers of America Best 1st P.I. Novel competition and part of the prize was a publishing contract and an advance. It's a standard contract that includes foreign rights and various formats. Since the contract was binding for the one book only, poor sales or some other calamity may affect the NEXT contract, but not this one.

READ! When you read a book as a writer, you study the style more so than the story itself and if it's poorly written, it becomes a distraction. You'll learn what NOT to do in your own writing. But when you can read as a reader rather than a writer, it's a testament to the story. Pay attention to that.

I love the dirty, dusty landscape of west Texas and wanted to incorporate it into a story centered around a character I had in mind. My first thoughts of the character—Gypsy—was that of a private investigator who really didn't want to work, who was in need of a couple weeks off but gets goaded into taking a case.
