Oh, I'm sure it was quite tame by today's standards, but maybe at the time twelve-year-olds weren't so hard to impress! I don't really read horror per se, but I do read a lot of pulps. I especially love Cornell Woolrich, who had his own special brand of creepy/eerie, and whose work I find endlessly appealing - I only wish there were more of it extant :)

No connection so far as I know. My biological father's parents were German immigrants, but who knows what went on with the rest of the family? And you're right, the name Schafer - and its dozens of spelling variations - is very common in a number of countries, which makes it difficult to get the lineages all sorted properly. Really enjoyed the book, though - such a fascinating history!
