Rebecca E. Hirsch My newest book, due out in 2019, is When Plants Attack: Strange and Terrifying Plants. The idea grew out of research I had done on a previous book, Plants Can't Sit Still. In that earlier research, I had come across many strange and fascinating plants that I couldn't include in the first book. I circled back to the creepiest ones and featured them in my new book.
Rebecca E. Hirsch I don't wait for inspiration. I do sit down to write at roughly the same time every day, so that habit helps put me in the right mindset. If I'm not inspired when I start, I usually am once I get going.
Rebecca E. Hirsch My nonfiction book for teens on wild bees, Where Have All the Bees Gone?, is coming out in early 2020. I have a middle grade book on living fossils in the works. And I am writing several picture books, including one on winged animals and another on trees.
Rebecca E. Hirsch Write whatever tickles you and draws you in. Try your best to be good at writing and to always be improving. Read a lot, especially the kinds of books you want to write. Know that the thrill of being published or winning an award is fleeting. Instead, seek joy in the act of writing itself.
Rebecca E. Hirsch The best thing is sharing with lots of kids what I find fascinating and important about science and nature. The second best thing is working in my slippers.
Rebecca E. Hirsch I don't often face writer's block, but if I do, it's either because I'm tired or because I haven't fed my brain fresh inspiration. If I'm tired, the solution is coffee, a nap, or a day off. If I need inspiration, doing more research on my topic helps. So does a visit to the library to read or a hike with nature journal in hand.
