Ted Myers About Grace by Anthony Doer
Ted Myers The memoir was my first book-length work. I used to regale people I knew (music fans) with many anecdotes about meeting and hanging out with music legends like The Who, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, and James Taylor. "Man," they would say, "you should write a book." And I did.
Ted Myers I always had a penchant for writing. At school, I was always writing. I was a songwriter and rock musician for 20 years (read my memoir), so, when my voice went south, I got a job writing advertising copy at an ad agency. I soon realized that I wanted to use my talent for more than touting the virtues of some product, so I quit the agency and started writing my memoir.
Ted Myers A themed collection of short stories called "Tales from the Hereafter," all first-person narratives by people who have recently died. Although it may sound gloomy, it's not. It runs the gamut from grim and darkly funny to downright cheerful.
Ted Myers 1) Take a course. The workshops I attended at UCLA Extension, where a group of a dozen or so aspiring writers brought in 10 pages each class and exchanged them, and getting that feedback from my classmates -- and also seeing how good some of them were -- was invaluable to me.
2) Find your voice. Write as if you were telling a story to just one person -- in your real voice. Don't strain your brain to find ten-dollar words -- although it's also a good idea to keep a "lexicon" -- a notebook of great and unusual words -- as you find them.
Ted Myers Communicating and entertaining readers, getting (positive) responses to my writing from readers, and never having to leave my computer.
Ted Myers Focus on something else -- like finding a publisher for my next book or getting my short stories published in literary magazines. It's no use trying to force ideas to come; they come when they come.
