How To Be a Heroine is one of my favourite memoirs, and also loved 'Take Courage'. In 'HTBAH' you mentioned you were writing a play about Gertrude Bell-what is it called, and is it published? I am interested in her and would love to use the play in my school drama club if this is allowed?
Samantha Ellis I am so sorry I never saw this question till now. I’m afraid i am not really able to license that play. But thank you so much for thinking of me and my work and I wish you all the best with your drama club!

I just wanted to echo all the "How to Be a Heroine" love! I am enjoying it immensely, as a book-lover, woman, child of immigrants, and a disability rights attorney. Super excited to hear about the Anne Brontë book as well. :) Do you follow Book Riot by any chance? I'm going to their convention in November. It'd be awesome to see/hear you at one of their events.
Samantha Ellis Thank you! That's lovely to hear. I hear great things about Book Riot, but as I'm in the UK, doing events in the US is a bit tricky. I'm always open to invitations though!

Hello, Ms. Ellis! I recently finished How to be a Heroine (and just now saw that you had liked my review, which I thought was super awesome and also embarrassing for me, because while I loved the book, I tend to be very critical of things). I see in one of the other answers that you are writing a book about Anne Bronte. I love books about books or authors. Do you have any more books of this type in the plans?
Samantha Ellis Hello, I'm v. glad you enjoyed the book! I don't know about future books...just trying to write this one on Anne Brontë first & then we'll see, but I'll keep you posted & who knows...

Hi Samantha, I bought your book "how to be a heroine" on a whim and am LOVING it. Reading it very slowly to savour but have used the GR currently reading section to quote so many gems! Will post a review when I am done. Thank you! Have you any other books in progress?

Did you never read the Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace when you were growing up? The heroine in these books which take her from childhood to adult is a writer in early 20th century mid western USA and has been cited as an inspiration by many feminist writers. They were before your time initially but have been reprinted due to a coterie of dedicated fans.
Samantha Ellis I never did! You're not the first person to recommend them, but they are not that much read on this side of the pond, so I didn't come across them until writing my book.

Do you see any similarities between Cathy from Wuthering Heights and Scarlett O'hara from Gone With the WInd? Also do you feel as if the heroines are your sisters?
Samantha Ellis I definitely think Cathy and Scarlett have a lot in common; their passion, their boldness, for starters. I don't want to spoil the book for you but I also ended up thinking that Scarlett is (I know this might be a controversial view) a lot more altruistic than Cathy; she gets her family and friends through the Civil War & all that comes after. Cathy is, I think, more wrapped up in herself and her (very complicated) feelings, and doesn't help anyone else.

I think I feel the heroines are my team!

This is not a question.... just to say I can't wait to read this book! You have my favorite heroine Scarlett O'Hara which gets through any trouble I have been through and Esther Greenwood of The Bell Jar. Thank you for writing the book! I always felt I was weird having book characters that I talked too! What are other inspirations that you have found?

Hello Ms. Ellis. I wanted to thank you for writing such a wonderful book. I bought it for my daughter who just graduated with a degree in English but I ended up reading it and loving it. I wrote a review if you care to read it. For a question, do you think Jane Eyre and Lizzy Bennet could be friends? Do you think they have enough in common and look at life in similar ways?
Samantha Ellis I do! I think they both have a sense of humour and a caustic take on the world, & they both hate snobbery. I think they'd get on very well.
