I'd been writing as long as I can remember. I'd been inspired by so many so take my writing to higher levels: my favorite band (hi, Rush!), my favorite authors (hi, all of you!), and my favorite husband (hi, only husband!)
I'm inspired by what I see, what I hear, and what I leave behind.

(view spoiler)[When I started out to write The Heartbeat Thief, I wanted to explore a new doorway to immortality. As a reader, I shamelessly prefer vampire stories—the classics are my favorite (although my idea of a "classic" might be different than everyone else's).
But, as a writer, I like finding new ways to tell those stories. My first series was a trilogy that focused on demivampires, werewolves, and their ancient Egyptian origins. This story, however, was not a vampire story, so my challenge was: how does someone become immortal other than vampirism? The answer: vampirism…with a twist.
Senza became immortal when a spell was cast upon her. However, the spell must be "fed" in order for it to continue—and it is fed with heartbeats.
My research of Victorian sentiments of what is proper and what is scandalous led me to feel that traditional vampirism (drinking blood) would be scandalous to the point of erotica—NOT what I wanted. In an age where ankles were hidden and first names used only in the privacy of intimate company, even a lingering touch might seem salacious.
So I took the essence of vampirism--taking life from another to survive--and dressed it in crinoline and lace, powdered it with shadows, and the heartbeat thief Senza Tyne was born.

When someone talks about one of my stories, I go right over the moon. It's such an amazing feeling—if I see a comment on Twitter or Goodreads, I get so jazzed. Those little connections make me feel like I created something that matters. When readers like what they read and talk about it, I feel like the person I'd written the story for had finally found it.

Always persevere.
There is a huge learning curve in the beginning and I think a lot of us go into this business with an established set of expectations. Trouble is, the first lesson you learn is to forget what you think you know.
Take time to observe others who are ahead of you on the path to publication. Learn from their highs and their lows. Learn the craft of writing. Learn the ins and outs of the business itself. Reset your expectations and the keep writing, keep submitting, keep getting your stories out there.
Just persevere.

I've always had the heart and mind of a writer, long before I started putting words on paper. I studied pharmacy in college and work full time in retail (LOVE giving flu shots!) but ten years ago, or so, I just started writing. I had no real goals or plans; didn't have any specific projects or books. I just wanted to write out the schemes and passages that I daydreamed about in my down-time moments.
I wrote several thousand words in a series of related passages, kind of a loosely-jointed story. It was fun. It was a hobby. But then one morning I woke up with a tagline in my head and the remnants of a dream that still held my mind's eye... and I was driven to write it out.
That dream eventually became my first novel, BLEEDING HEARTS.
Been tapping the keys non-stop every since!

I write something else! There is no shortage of things on my To Write list...everything from poetry to blog post to promotional material. The worst thing for a writer to do is stare at the blank page and surrender to the block. I switch gears, play some music, and tickle my muse in another spot. Works every time!

Right now, I'm working on a NA novel called The Heartbeat Thief. It's kinda like Jane Austen an Edgar Allen Poe are on a date and the Grim Reaper tags along. So, I guess I'd call it Victorian dark fantasy. It's got a happy ending, of course, because Poe makes me very smiley and happy. I lurve the Poe...so cheerfully depressed.
