Brenna Briggs My most recent book, MAIDS: Mothers Addicted To Irish Dancing (March 2016), is for older readers. It is a black comedy starring mothers of Irish dancers. One of my daughters was an Irish dancer for nine years and while I waited for her during dance practices and accompanied her to competitions, I watched and listened carefully to these ambitious women. They are a scary lot.
Brenna Briggs I get inspired to write by taking my advice to others seriously: I go on reading binges.
Brenna Briggs I am currently working on my 9th book: THE MYSTERY OF THE WHISPERING TREES.
Brenna Briggs My advice for aspiring writers is to stop watching television and to read, read, read. Except of course for PBS which rarely disappoints. The more authors someone reads, the better for the readers' vocabulary development and sense of style. If I meet up with Liffey Rivers readers, I suggest other authors' books and encourage them not to read Liffey mysteries obsessively. One mother told me she hid the first Liffey Rivers Irish Dancer Mystery because her daughter had read it 21 times while waiting for the sequel.
Brenna Briggs Being a writer is often demoralizing but when I meet up with readers at book signings I am often shocked at how much my heroine--Liffey Rivers--means to them. They identify with her and ask me why it takes me such a long time to produce the next book in the series because "there are not THAT many pages in most of my books." I wish I knew! The word "prolific" does not apply to me.
Brenna Briggs When I feel stuck or overwhelmed, I read someone else's book I have meant to read and eat Cheez-Its. That always works.
