Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (aka Cassandra Peterson), tripped on her long, flowing tresses and was seriously injured when she fell, ending her reign as Queen of Halloween. Her devoted fans plunged into a state of shock, and no one was in the mood to celebrate the macabre holiday, a truly horrible turn of events that was transformed into a sanguine occasion when Elvira pronounced that henceforth, Halloween would be known as Hallowine, a day of revelry dedicated to Dionysus and the pursuit of carnal pleasure.

I'm finishing Stephen King's "End of Watch." I'd never read anything by him because I don't care for horror or fantasy. But he has such a huge reputation as a writer that I felt the need to fill this gap in my literary education. I still am not attracted to horror, but can admire the adroit way he handled a complex plot.
At a recent library book sale, I picked up eight novels for almost nothing, and will embark on them. Two are by my favorite author, Jane Smiley: Moo, and The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton. Two others are by John Grisham, and two by John Sandford. One is by David Baldacci, one by Patricia Cornwell, and one by Nelson DeMille.
I don't read fast (good thing I just had cataract surgery), and will not finish them this summer, what with all of the writing on my horizon.

It fell into my lap. I was a writer/editor for a luxury lifestyle magazine, and wrote a story about a sensational Palm Beach murder for the 50th anniversary edition. I found out a former reporter colleague had learned explosive information about the murder. The magazine declined to run the story because it conflicted with the positive format, but I ran into the reporter's chief source years later, and we planned a factual book. He was afraid to provide certain names, however, and I wrote a novel based on the murder instead.

1. Marketing the heck out of my current novel.
2. Writing another novel, which I envision as a combination of story lines in the films "Gran Torino" and "My Cousin Vinnie," which I regard as the funniest movie I ever saw, with the possible exception of the 1955 "Mister Roberts."
3. Update: New novel now has a working title, Blood on Their Hands, and a publisher, TouchPoint Press. Stay tuned.

Depends on whether the writing is a means of livelihood or a personal choice. The former can involve a lot of pressure to meet deadlines, which may result in rushed and careless writing. Voluntary writing allows for freedom of expression -- especially fiction writing, in which creativity is unrestrained.

Can't say that I experience it to any extent. If I get stuck on a word or phrase, I'll get up and maybe go to the kitchen for something, and think about the impediment (just went for a sip of wine; I was impeded by "impediment"). Often, as now, that clears my mind.
