I'd like to say I dream up ideas out of thin air but that's not true. Some of my best inspirations come from reading the news; not doom scrolling on my phone, but actually reading it in print, say in a newspaper or magazine. Then combining various incidents into composite imaginary scenarios. Of course, the more experience I rack up, the more ideas I have.

Freedom from the "real world" and getting to use your imagination. The challenging part is creating fictional scenarios that seem vivid, believable and real. I also enjoy writing professional book reviews and nonfiction books (my first professional job was as a journalist at a newspaper. )

The best way to get inspired to write, fiction or nonfiction is to read a newspaper. You'll find more "truth is stranger than fiction" material than you can possibly do justice to, in a lifetime!
