How did it come about that you write lesbian fiction? Do you feel you chose your path, or did it choose you? Have you ever wanted to try your hand at poems or literary nonfiction? I love your writing, and all of your books, and I much appreciate your readings on You Tube. Dinah Dietrich
Karin Kallmaker Hi Dinah - I saw the movie Desert Hearts, which was based on a novel by Jane Rule. That led me to the library and a face plant into Curious Wine by Katherine Forrest. After that I didn't want to write anything else. I've never been tempted into poetry (though I like poetry) or anything other than fiction. My brain still finds new ways to talk about love, the world we live in and how women triumph in the end.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Karin Kallmaker Read everything by the writer you want to become - this time carefully, analytically. Study it. Try to figure out why you fell in love with that writer, how she made a story work like magic for you. Then study another writer you admire. And all the while keep reading for pleasure too. Reading is the most important thing a writer can to do to grow.
