D.L. Brown It sounds trite, but you should write/type. It may be nothing more than a basic story idea, or a few lines of dialogue, but it helps the overall process. I have recorded idle story thoughts on post it notes (many, many post-it notes), napkins...even on a receipt. An idea may form at any moment. Having a pen and paper at hand helps me retain the idea's original form.
D.L. Brown I write to mostly to exorcise the ideas that pop into my head and bother me until I put pen to paper. Yes, I hand write most of my stories. I prefer that creative connectivity between my brain and a pen.
D.L. Brown Since I am, mechanically, a poor writer, I tend to get stuck on moving the story along to the next step or scene/interaction. When this happens, I leave it alone for a time or shift to another story.
D.L. Brown The best thing so far has been the feedback. It has been sparse, but having a reader connect with the story at some level is very satisfying.
D.L. Brown Grave Tales was originated from several disconnected interactions. I did not consider they had a connective theme until after the second story was finished and I was working on the the third. Two unrelated conversations spawned the ideas for "In a Lonely Place" and "In Amongst the Trees." "Tin Box" was derived from my own encounter with a mint tin on a low wall.
D.L. Brown When my day job permits, I am primarily working in another themed collection of short stories which will be a mix of horror and science fiction. Additionally, when the mood hits me and I have a rare spare moment, I split time between a couple of novels.
