Roger Stark I am working on a new project that surprises even me. I have never assigned the title of "writer" to myself. Yes, I have written and published 2 books, but they were about Recovery and really a digest of what I learned in my own Recovery process.
"They Called Him Marvin" is the story of a friend that is so remarkable that I felt the world needed to hear it. With his permission I began researching and writing. Dean Sherman enlisted in the US Army a year before Pearl Harbor. When a buddy took him to church in Salt Lake City he fell in love with a beautiful 15 year old named Connie. 3 years later, he had become a B-29 pilot and they were married. They had less than 2 years together before he shipped overseas. During that time Marvin was conceived.
Lt. Sherman's assignments took him from India to the Marianas as part of the Air Corps efforts to bomb Japan. He was a faithful letter writer and 50 of his letters home have been preserved as well as 20 of Connie's letters to him. The letters themselves tell some of the story.
When Dean was shot down over Nagoya on 14 May 1945 he was captured. B-29ers were not assigned the status of POW by the Japanese but declared War Criminals because the indiscriminate fire bombing of urban areas. Given a sham trial, Dean and 10 other airmen were beheaded in July 1945, just a month before the war ended.
It is a sacrifice worthy of our rememberance.
