Susan Kiernan-Lewis Because my dystopian series is all about how a woman reacts when the worst possible thing happens, I imagined how the rest of the world would behave toward a country thrown back to the 18th century. I looked at how other 3rd world countries are treated today--and thought of some of the ways they're taken advantage of by unscrupulous opportunists and the idea of a covert baby farm just popped up. (After all, there are few to no laws left in post-apocalyptic Ireland at this stage.) Cold Comfort is the story of one evil woman's determination to create an empire (and ironically a legacy for herself) by selling Irish babies to the childless couples of the world. This is the rich, unaffected part of the world that wasn't hit by the EMP but doesn't have the one thing that money can't buy--a child.
Susan Kiernan-Lewis As an ex-advertisng copywriter, I never had the luxury to wait for inspiration. I find that as soon as I sit down and start typing away, the juices begin to flow and I find inspiration in the work itself.
Susan Kiernan-Lewis I'm currently writing Cold Comfort, the 6th book in my apocalyptic thriller series, The Irish End Games. I'm always in love with whatever book I'm in the process of writing and this one is no different. I started this series b/c I was fascinated with the idea--as a mother--of life without electronics for my son. So I took it one step further and created a world where I eliminated cars and telephones too. The result was one adventure after another. This series is told from a woman's perspective, really, a mother's point of view. I think that's what makes it different and, for women, really engaging.
Susan Kiernan-Lewis Don't give up. Write every day. Figure out what you want as a writer, i.e. do you want money or fame or do you write because you love it or a combination of the three?
Susan Kiernan-Lewis The readers, definitely. When you live in the world of the mind creating stories, it's beyond awesome to discover people who think like you do and enjoy what you write.
Susan Kiernan-Lewis I'm an ex-advertising copywriter. After years of "being creative" on demand in my day-job, I never got in the habit of thinking I had the luxury of being blocked. Haha. So it's never happened to me and for that, I'm grateful!
