My most recent book was part childhood memories and part imagination.

My characters come and tell me their story. I write down what I can in the time they're with me. If their tale is compelling, I continue without them. When I get stuck, sometimes they make a return to help me along.

'No' is never the definitive answer. If you get a lot of 'No', 'No thank you,' 'Not for me'. That's fine, work at your project and make it the best work you can do - get help, ask for advice, use tools to teach you how to edit for yourself - not so you can avoid the editing process, but to help you enhance your work to make it easier for someone to read and help.

Writer's block is the bane of most writer's writing at some point in their career. Personally, I go and do something else and allow my thoughts to percolate. Gardening is a good project for me. I can think about other things, away from characters and plotlines. I also find that if I 'ignore' the characters, they get stroppy and start to clamour for my attention. When they have something to say, I can listen and write down their story.
My mind is always busy (sometimes too busy) and it solves its own problems eventually.
