Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane! His humble, bumbling brilliance and her cool-on-the-outside passion seemed so romantic to me as a teen, and now decades later I can really appreciate the complexity of their relationship. And I think I've always had a crush on Lord Peter!

Write as if no one will ever read it. Don't censor yourself in the first draft. Let the words spill forth with no inhibitions or constraints. When you are finished, let the work rest.
Then go after it with a scalpel! Edit it within an inch of its life! Make every word count, no throat-clearing or blathering. Ask yourself at every scene, "Is this interesting to anyone else but me?"
