Nechama Brodie Being a writer means I have a permanent excuse to behave like Alice in Wonderland, and follow any and all rabbit holes that present themselves to me. I'm a curious person by nature, and I like digging up answers to questions. Depending on how interesting either one (the question or the answer is), there's always a chance I can turn it into an article, or even a book...
Nechama Brodie A guy at a coffee shop asked me this exact question the other day. What should he do if he wants to become a writer? The only real advice here is: write. Once you're actually writing (and not just 'writing' but writing and finishing – something, anything: articles, short stories, poems), then you can worry about where to place it or how to get published. But none of that happens if you don't write. I've been writing since I was a kid, and it's taken years of work as a journalist (nearly two decades to be precise) to get better at writing and finishing. I'm only learning the book publishing ropes now!
