I try to write anyway, usually the first thing that comes into my head. Sometimes I've actually written two or three pages before I stop, put it away and re-visit a few days later to pick the bones out of it. Once or twice I've amazed myself with how good it was, but usually there's a mass deleting and re-editing until I'm satisfied with it.
