I tell the story briefly at the front of UNMANAGED: I was running the LA office of a large global agency, and I was laid off during the GED in 2009. During my exit interview, my boss, who had been almost entirely useless during my time there, said to me, as if being laid off was otherwise justified, "You were never really that good of a manager, anyway."
I decided to write a book with the working title of "How to Run Your F**king Agency" by The Guy You Fired. When I did the research, I realized he had been right, but that pretty much everyone else was not really that good of a manager, either. I spent 10+ years proving out how to do things right, and then wrote the book.
Will always be grateful that he was such a jerk. It made me a better manager and person.

I'm an old Sci-Fi fan/reader, so it would probably be Larry Niven's Ringworld. I like complexity and a good puzzle.

I woke to a strange sound in the dark of night and, unsure sure of what time, went downstairs to see what was going on, but all of the doors and windows were gone, just blank walls where they had been, and the lights wouldn't work.
I'm not sure how many days or weeks ago that was, but I am still downstairs, it is completely dark, and though I feel completely awake, I can't seem to find the stairs, or even the walls, and the only reality that remains is the floor I am sitting on, and that occasional scraping sound that woke me.
