Book 2 of my fantasy series, "The Wall" is well underway. There is a solid first draft, though it needs a substantial amount of editing to make it all fit together coherently.

Generally, I skip to a different portion of the story. Sometimes that leads to discontinuities, but resolving discontinuities is easier than getting blank pages to magically fill themselves. Having a long, multi-novel series is an advantage in that case. I can skip forward and backward, if portions of the story hang me up.

Long hours and really, really low pay? I've been working on my current book series, granted not continuously, for forty years.
There are two things, I think, that keep me going. The first is that I have to write. I have a story in me, and the only thing that scratches that itch is writing.
Beyond that, there are the readers. I would write without them. I have written for decades with only my friends and family reading my stories. However, I think my novel has something in it worth reading. I hope that folks will read the story and be impacted in some positive way by what they read.

(Oops. I answered the question, "How *did* you get inspired to write?")
Several factors combined. I had always been a reader, but in fourth grade, my teacher was an author, with a published book. I have no clue what the book was about, but the fact that she was an author struck a chord in me.
The second factor was in a similar time frame, I discovered C. S. Lewis's Narnia Chronicles. Those books intrigued and delighted me in a way that no other book had done before. I wanted to do the same.
