Lots of places. I was interested in Texas in the Civil War, and a chance encounter with Morris Raphael's little book "Battle in the Bayou Country" launched me toward New Mexico, New Orleans, and New Iberia.

As a historian, it is about making a difference, of contributing to the body of knowledge. An author agent once advised me to "write about something everybody already knows about." That makes great sense from a marketing stand point, but I'd rather write about stuff that may be new to most people. That's where I get the most joy . . . in helping people recover their past.

Time on target. Just spending time thinking--a great luxury for most folks--helps. Plus, the research process inspires as well. When in doubt, drive it out . . . I take a road trip to some place I am writing about and let the muse speak.
