Lisa Williams Kline I have told students that writing is no different from playing the piano or basketball or soccer. You have to practice to get good.
No one would dream of giving a piano recital without practicing. But somehow people think they can write one draft of a story and it will be ready to publish.
So, practice, practice, practice. Read, read, read, Revise, revise, revise. If you write one story or book and it doesn't sell, write another one.
Finally, becoming a part of a writing community is so important. Writing can be lonely, and you want to build yourself a support network.
Lisa Williams Kline I absolutely love the writing friends I've made. They mean the world to me.
I also love having the opportunity to work out my views of the world and my emotions in my stories.
Also, it's pretty cool to buy books and write them off on my taxes!
Lisa Williams Kline If I don't know what's going to happen in the next scene I will often go for a run, bike ride or walk. By the end I usually have the answer, so physical exercise sometimes gets the muse going for me!
Lisa Williams Kline I was working on the Sisters in All Seasons series and my publisher had just asked me for another book. When I told my parents, my mother said, "Your father and I want you to write about us."
So I did! The grandparents in the story are based on my parents, and the lake house where Diana and Stephanie stay is based on the lake house where our family spent many happy summer weekends. In the book, Diana has something happen to her that had just recently happened to me. But I won't reveal what that is!
