I'm a complete comic book nerd, so yes, the riverboat gambler from HER WICKED CAPTAIN originated with X-men's Gambit! And after seeing the movie with that character, I couldn't help but imagine Taylor Kitsch as the tortured young steamboat captain. A little research brought up the name of Caroline Dye, a former Arkansas slave who'd become a legendary psychic in her time. She was the basis for my fortuneteller heroine.

I'm currently doing research for the third River Rogues book. It takes place a few years after the first two books in the series, so I'm getting all the historical details I'll need to write it. To be honest, I love this part! This is when I start to "see and hear" the characters for the first time.
