M. Terry Green I came across shamanism in archaeological contexts, trying to understand how Native California religion changed as a result of the missions. From the moment I learned about indigenous healers traveling in a spiritual realm, I knew I'd write a novel about it. It was just too fascinating and fun. The possibilities for fantasy story-telling in that world are boundless!

I was also keen to keep the books YA-friendly. Because traditional shamanism was often practiced with the use of hallucinogens, I didn't want to seem like I was advocating them. So, instead I turned to something I felt comfortable with--technology. I dreamed up 3D goggles that could induce the ecstatic and out-of-body state that shamans experienced.

Finally though, I wanted a heroine who wasn't your typical dagger-wielding badass (not that dagger-wielding badass chicks aren't awesome). Instead I wanted someone whose heroism was fueled by compassion. The idea for a modern-day healer--battling insurmountable odds and fighting to protect the people that she loves--came together in a flash. I was incredibly excited to write it!

I guess I'm still excited. :) Thanks for the question!
