Pip Jones Hi Ashli – I'm so sorry it has taken me ages to reply. I didn't get an email notification about your question, and so I completely missed it 'til now. In answer, I do go to festivals and do Squishy McFluff events (assume it's Squishy your little girl is enjoying? How lovely!). I'm waiting for news of some festivals through the summer months at the moment. If you'd like to contact me through my own website pipjones.net (use the contact form) and tell me whereabouts you live, I can let you know if I'm ever going to be at a festival near you. In the meantime, tell your daughter I say hi, and I hope the reading is going from strength to strength. Pip
Pip Jones Sometimes, a big, whole idea can come from the littlest thing – and the entire premise for Piggy Handsome was inspired by the name. Children at my daughters' primary school collectively gave this name to a class guinea pig. I thought it was wonderful. Instantly, I thought, 'wow, this guinea pig should be going places with a name like that!' And there it was, the idea. The harder part is filling in all the gaps, because an idea needs turning into a great plot!
Pip Jones I try to notice what makes both children and parents laugh. To me, they're equally important, and I love to write children's books which appeal on both levels.
Pip Jones I'm working on a new series for young readers, about a conceited, pompous guinea pig called Piggy Handsome. I also have two picture books in the illustration process currently, and I am nearly always working on a Squishy McFluff instalment.
Pip Jones Read a lot and write a lot. The more you write, the better you will become at writing. You can have a natural talent for something, but there is no innate talent that can't be improved. Feedback can also be helpful, so join a writing group – the support can mean the difference between going and going, or giving up.
Pip Jones Writing. Simple as that. If you love writing, which I always have, for as long as I can remember, then 'being a writer' is just tremendous.
Pip Jones I stare at the contents of the fridge, and if that doesn't work, I have to leave the work alone for a while and try to let the back of my head do the thinking, without the front of my head interfering.
