Jennifer Willis I have a professional excuse to be weird.
Jennifer Willis This is tough, and I'll give the advice I wish I could go back and give to my earlier self: You don't need anyone's permission to write or to experiment. You don't have to be afraid of writing or worry that you don't have a right to do it. When I go back and look at my earlier work, I can see in that stiff prose how nervous and restricted I was, because I hadn't yet gotten comfortable with what I was doing. That's a major piece of finding your voice as a writer, just understanding that an urge to write or to tell a story is the permission to do it.
Jennifer Willis I have a few projects on my plate just now. I'm working on the proof of "Lovers and Lunatics" (MARS 2) and am finalizing the outline for "Mars Heat" (MARS 3)—which I'm supposed to be first-drafting this month. After that, the next project in line is "The Chaos Witch" (Valhalla 5), which I hope to complete this coming fall.
Jennifer Willis In April or May 2016, I was headed home from a meeting with my writers' group, and I was thinking about how much I wanted to write science fiction and how much my peers were urging me to give romantic comedy a try. I was crossing the Willamette River on the Ross Island Bridge when the central idea for "Mars Ho!"—a sexy take on a reality TV show to choose the first colonists headed to Mars—hit me pretty much full in the face. Sometimes, you just get lucky like that.
