Thinking about it for a while, I think my favorite fictional couple are George Milton and Lennie Small from Steinbeck's novel "Of mice and men". They complemented each other; George was rational, protective of Lennie, whereas Lennie was feeble-minded, sentimental, extravagant. The end of the book shows that love does not conquer all, but that love makes our lives worth living.
