The ghost in Evelyn's house is meant to be a metaphor for generational trauma. Each of the women experience the ghost differently. The closer to the original incident/trauma, the more clearly the woman experiences the ghost.
It was important to me, however, that the ghost not necessarily be menacing. The ghost is mostly trying to help or teach the women.
