Auburn walked carefully along the ancient stone gallery, enjoying the solitude and the cryptic carvings.
Until the footsteps echoed from underneath, fast, sure, and ascending.

From my work, actually.
I'm a futurist specializing in higher education. This means I travel, speak, consult, write, present, and make media about where colleges and universities could be going. This, in turn, means I not only conduct a giant amount of research, but also share it with people who when react to those ideas. So I've been involved in a continuous, sprawling conversation with thousands of people.
It's just built up to the point now where I need to get it out, and down.

Partly by realizing that the ideas I've been thinking and talking about will "blush unseen, / And waste its sweetness on the desert air" unless I get the damned things on paper (or screens).
Partly by remembering the awesome thrill of writing in the past.
And, sometimes, because of the urgency of the topic.

It depends on the day.
Sometimes it's having written, being able to look back at books, articles, chapters I've successfully published. That's always satisfying.
Other times it's the terrific connection with readers. There's nothing as electric as learning that someone somewhere else on Earth has taken the time to look at my writing and think about it.
And during the process of writing, when I'm in the groove, typing out words in a frenzy so heated my fingers and laptop can't type up? Ah, nothing like it.

I change the physical situation. At home, that means heading outside to split wood, haul stones, weed the garden, or just walk in the woods. That shift usually unblocks my mind.
Or I use a game, like Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies.
