Go to a coffee shop and just start writing short sentence and phrases that are going to be part of, or might be part of the content. After you have enough of those you have a jumping off point and it's time to start organizing, sifting, and then filling gaps.

I love to write, so inspiration is pretty natural. I do a good amount of blogging. For a new topic I have to read enough to feel like I have a gestalt, a theme. For a book, it just feels like something I need to write, but then I have to refine the concept over time.

I was thinking about writing a book on how galaxies form and evolve, but this is a highly technical cutting edge topic. I decided before that I would create something with much broader appeal. Some searching indicated there weren't many options for a book dominated by beautiful images of galaxies, plus I wanted to target for the iPad - kind of a coffee table book for an iPad.
