I'm supposed to be working on the next book in Pledge of Dragons, but I'm taking a break right now for a fun little vampire novel. :)

I don't even know why we do this to ourselves. The idea for a novel usually comes at two in the morning. You write it down feverishly on the wall with a crayon, and then get yelled at for writing on the wall with crayons, plus no sleep, and THEN you get to spend the next six months bashing your head on a desk trying to fix the plot until finally...
You get to edit it. The idea you once loved, you now hate, and who could ever love such a beast of a novel?!
And then you put it away, and months later come back and discover that you actually still love the idea, and it just needs some fixing.
And then you start looking for a publisher, or at least a few readers, just so you can talk to someone else about the characters you love and not feel silly.

I clean. Scientific studies say that the mindless task frees your mind up. I think it's more like punishing myself until I get back in the chair.
