THE MOMMY GROUP is the true story of my own mother's group. I joined when I was pregnant with my daughter, Clara. Over the next two years, these women became some of my closest friends. When we all went looking for books about motherhood -- not how-to guides about having a baby -- but books about what was happening to us, there was little to be found. So I decided to write the book we needed.

I have a five year old. I don't get inspired; I work when I can. Coffee helps.

My first book, THE MOMMY GROUP, is out today, March 1, 2016. So currently I am working on essays and pieces about being a mother. For my next project? I do have an idea buzzing around... A big nonfiction project that will have to do with children and education. But I'll save more details on that...

Read everything. Then try to write it. Rinse and repeat.

Getting to do this thing I've dreamed of since I was a child. At eight years old, I wished I'd written Jane Eyre. At twelve, I was obsessed with Truman Capote and Dorothy Parker and dreamed of living in New York and writing deep satire and living in an apartment with a view of the East River. By eighteen I was living in Manhattan, and thinking I would write screenplays like Nora Ephron. Then I fell in love with creative nonfiction and postmodern novels and wanted to be Martin Amis or Zadie Smith or Joan Didion. The best thing about being a writer? That I get to BE a writer!

I'm the mom of a five year old, and when you have a small child, writer's block is a luxury! I have to use the time I get effectively. And because there is often so little actual writing time, I try to get my thinking time in while doing other things, like sitting on the playground or riding the subway. I also frequently write on my phone, at 2am, after I've thought out some tricky bit of work in the shower.
