I have a quote from Stephen King posted above my desk:
"Stopping a piece of work just because it's hard is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don't feel like it and sometimes you're doing good work when it feels like all you're managing to do is shovel shit from a sitting position."
I don't allow myself to get "blocked." I make sure I write something, anything, even if it's not at the same place in my story as I left off. I try a different scene.

Read as much as you can, particularly in the genre you like to read and write. Pay attention to what it is that authors you like do to develop characters, plot, scenes, tension. And definitely read Stephen King's On Writing--best book for fiction writers wanting to hone their craft.

Ideas come into my head and I explore them through my writing. I'm not an outliner, I'm a seat of the pantser who experiences the story as it unfolds rather than knowing where everything is going to go from the outset.

(view spoiler)[I wanted to write a unique book about dogs and include the dog's viewpoint in the narrative. Second Chances is about a war dog, Samuel L. Jackson, who experiences a lot of trauma in Afghanistan. He and his handler are separated and have to cope with PTSD. I thought it would be interesting to view a dog suffering with PTSD and living on the streets and how that might be similar to a human vet. (hide spoiler)]
