I take out a pen and paper and see what appears. My books are about things that are important to me. I take in information from many sources, from newspapers to random conversations, that gets added to the mishmash in my head. Then, one day, an idea seems to appear from nowhere.

I always have more than one project going at the same time. I'm currently excited about some ideas for a board or picture book about race.

Write! Don't wait to take a class or for the right time. Just start writing.

When I get stuck, I take a walk or, if the weather is warm, go for a bike ride or swim. My problem isn't having enough to write but having too many ideas. The hard part is to pare the ideas down to one book.
