Hmmm…like I have a choice about whether or not to write. Writing has been my go-to activity for as long as I can remember. Whether letters to friends and family, musings in the journals I've kept since 1979, or academic publications for my day job, over the years I've filled hundreds of thousands of pages with millions of words--most seen by very few people. The best thing about being an author (as opposed to the writer I have always been), is hearing from people who've read and enjoyed my stories.

Before I start a new project, I brainstorm about the characters and come up with a general idea about who they are and the kind of story I hope to write. After the writing begins, the characters come to life at some point and take the story in unexpected and often surprising directions. I get lost and/or stall out because the story in progress is not the story I set out to write. Enter writer's block. I've learned to just keep writing. After false starts and a few stumbles into blind alleys, eventually I find my way to the end.
