Christa Miller I basically made it the Summer of Ladies in Horror Fiction. I read books by Margaret Killjoy (The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion), Justine Musk (BloodAngel), J.H. Moncrieff (Return to Dyatlov Pass), Mary SanGiovanni (Behind the Door), and Kristi DeMeester (Everything That's Underneath).
Christa Miller It's an effective way to process some of the most difficult aspects of life, whether injustice or relationships or even just your own complicated emotions. It's also an effective way to learn about new things. I write nonfiction for a living, and I love getting to talk to people about how things work and make the world a better place. I also love how my fiction my nonfiction complement each other -- my nonfiction is more creative, my fiction is tighter and more to the point. Generally I get to go wherever my brain takes me, and that's gold.
Christa Miller I have a very all-or-nothing personality, so if I'm not writing, I'm *really* not writing -- my last hiatus was 7 years! I didn't think I had anything left to say in fiction, but during that time I experienced so much that gave me a rich reserve of places and emotions and people to draw from. Now I make a point of writing every day, but if I'm stuck I find it helps to do what I did for 7 years before picking my writing back up again -- do (or even just read) something new, live in those moments, without even trying to solve the writing problem. I've found that the solution works itself out once my brain has a chance to look at life in a new light.
