The best thing about being a writer is that you're always seeing things, always curious about how things work and why people do what they do and what they think and feel. It makes me feel part of the universe -- I'm always engaged. It's the looking, the curiosity, the listening that keeps it all fresh and meaningful.

Currently tweaking my second novel, KENNEDY GIRL and looking for representation with a literary agent. See www.caitlinhicks.com under 'fiction' in the drop down and choose KENNEDY GIRL, you'll see the short elevator pitch and some early reviews. There are so many things this novel shares with the issues going around today, especially anything about racism. It's fun to have left the novel alone for a few months, then see it again with fresh eyes.

Turn on the timer for 10minutes and just start writing. Try to find someone to encourage you, a writing group for instance. I think the most important thing to do in the beginning is - get encouragement! And write! Don't worry about what you have written, it will all come out okay in time and with your work.

My most recent book, KENNEDY GIRL, is the continuing story of Annie Shea, the lovable protagonist of A THEORY OF EXPANDED LOVE, which takes place in 1963. Five years later, Annie is 17 years old. 1968 is a big year for historical events, and I thought it would be interesting to put her into the midst of the turmoil of the sixties, while she was just getting a grip on her own identity.
