When I finished writing Dust, I was very intrigued by the potential relationship between Max and Hannah, the clone of Max's deceased daughter. Losing a child is the worst pain a parent can feel, so how would you respond if you came face-to-face with someone who looked exactly like that lost child? Would you be able to interact with them? Would you be able to see them as their own person? I wanted to explore that relationship more, set against the backdrop of a society that is struggling with the growing pains of having expanded across the far reaches of space.
