Lisa Kovanda The baby's cries woke me up. I don't have a baby.
Lisa Kovanda Hogwarts, in the early, more innocent books. You know, I've always wondered how Hogwarts students learned things like reading, writing, math, history... You know, the stuff we Muggles spent twelve years of our life learning. Was there a spell or potion and "poof" there it is? (If there is, sign me up. I could use a refresher in a few areas.)
Lisa Kovanda Walk Me Home, the book that just released was based on a true story. I had 76 hours of interview tapes with the main character, so tons of great information to work with. I didn't get the idea, but was approached by his son, and asked to help him tell his dad's story. It was an honor to bring it to life.
Lisa Kovanda I love to write, so I actually dream about my characters. They fight for equal dream time. Seriously? I write to deadline a good chunk of the time. Writing can be the most difficult thing in the world. It's not like the words just fall out onto the page. There's a lot of time and thought that goes into writing. But, I have a favorite recliner, Fire Jolly Ranchers are amazing writing fuel, and sometimes the perfect song, or candle can inspire incredible ideas.
Lisa Kovanda I'm half-way through a Christmas script that I'll also be doing as a novella that will be part of a collection from a group of authors. It takes place in a hospice unit, so that puts a definite Kovanda spin on things.
Lisa Kovanda Write, write, write! Get involved in writing groups. Read lots. If you want to write movies, watch movies. Read scripts. Learn the craft. Mostly, live life, and write what's in your heart. My mentor says to rip the stories from the steaming asphalt highway of your soul. That works. If you have a burning passion to tell a story, do it. No one but you can.
Lisa Kovanda So many things. Nothing compares to holding a book in your hands you've written. Or sitting in a theater and watching your name in the credits. Or reading a review where a reader you've never met was touched by your words. Royalty statements are fantastic! Being paid to do something you love? A-freaking-mazing.
Lisa Kovanda Two words. Butt glue. You have to sit down and write. I'm a fairly consistent outliner. That helps me to know where the story needs to go next. I don't really believe in writer's block, so much as I do procrastination. If I'm uncertain about how a scene needs to play out, I like to free-write as a character. I start writing about anything, as the character. After a few minutes, I keep writing as the character, but ease into the circumstances of the scene, and allow the character to tell me what;s on their minds. It also helps to have that outline, to look at what comes next, and think in terms of how this scene creates the circumstances of the next scene.
