I have a file of ideas stored on my computer that have been inspired by newspaper articles, conversations, personal experiences etc. All three of my books have begun with a single sentence that came to me out of the blue - more often than not I can then use this sentence as the stepping stone into a story based on one of those ideas.

I was having a discussion with another writer who was in a panic because they had suddenly realised their screenplay idea had been done before. I suggested they switch the sex of the protagonist to get a different slant on the idea. It led me to consider which other classic set ups could be very different if the genders were reversed.

I have just completed my third novel, which I hope to place with a traditional publisher, and am working on a TV drama with a fellow screenwriter.
